Season 2

Buffy's 17th birthday is arriving, and Angel, Giles, Jenny, Xander, Cordelia, Willow and Oz prepares a birthday party surprise for her, while Drusilla and Spike have surprises on their own. When Buffy learns that the deadly duo have plotted to awaken a powerful and beastly demon named the Judge, Buffy needs to stop them from successfully assembling his body parts and reviving him, which could put the world to an end. Meanwhile, unknown to everyone else, Jenny Calendar is actually Janna, a descendant of the Romany clan who cursed Angel and has been sent to Sunnydale to ensure that the curse isn't lifted - and she is forced to do it anyway she can.

Angel is still in the street in pain but suddenly the pain stops and his first act is to kill a human. Angelus has returned as a result of he and Buffy making love. Meanwhile The Judge is returning to full power and Spike is impatient to get on with the killing when Angelus walks in and declares that he is back. The three reunited once again and Angelus persuades them to let him kill Buffy before they begin. Buffy comes in and fights him off and they ponder what could have happened to turn him evil. Buffy realizes that she was the cause and runs off. Angel appears to her in a dream to warn her about Ms Calendar and Buffy confronts Jenny demanding answers. She reveals her heritage and says that the curse can only be lifted if Angel experienced a moment of true human happiness and he is no longer plagued by guilt and remorse. In her fight with Angelus, she realizes that she cannot, yet, kill him.

Angelus hatches a plan to awaken the demon Acathla, who will open a gateway to a hell dimension, and bring Hell to Earth. Buffy and Willow discover Jenny’s plan to restore Angel’s soul, and Willow begins to work on recreating the spell. Buffy readies herself to stop Angel, and Kendra arrives with a powerful new weapon - a sword that can kill Acathla, who's just come in time to re-open hell. Buffy arrives too late to save Kendra from Drusilla’s surprise attack. Willow is in a coma and unable to complete the spell to restore Angel’s soul. Spike tells Buffy that he does not want the world to end either and that he wants to take Dru and leave town. Buffy heads to the mansion to confront Angelus. After a long fight ensuing in Acathla's death, Buffy, in order to seal the portal from hell, has to spill Angelus's blood. Just at the last moment Willow's spell through the Orb of Thesurah works and Angel's soul is restored but Buffy is forced to ram the sword through Angel's chest and sends him into hell sealing the portal.
